EXOTIC BIRDS TAKE OVER RICHMOND HILL ARENA

DURING CANADIAN NATIONAL CAGE BIRD SHOW & EXPO

Richmond Hill, ON, October 12, 2012 – Hundreds of exotic birds and their owners will be taking over the Richmond Green Sports Centre for the 2012 Canadian National Cage Bird Show & Expo, Canada’s top event for pet-bird owners, breeders, exhibitors and fans of exotic birds.

Hosted by the Toronto-based Budgerigar & Foreign Bird Society of Canada (BFBS) and sponsored by the Avicultural Advancement Council of Canada, the event is being held in Richmond Hill on October 20 and 21, 2012.

Club President Deirdre Graham states that the Expo has something for everyone, and invites the public to join in the fun in a friendly, interactive environment that’s perfect for families.

Activities at the Expo include:

• The opportunity to view the wide range of colourful birds on display, from the smallest to the largest, ranging from finches, canaries and budgies to conures, cockatoos and rare hyacinth macaws;

• The Bird Marketplace, a diverse group of vendors of birds, bird food, cages, bird toys and supplies, books, videos, bird-related crafts, and more;

• Raffle and silent auction;

• Sunday Companion Bird Show, inviting owners of various parrot species to showcase the beauty and talents of their birds; and

• Judging of many exotic species by professional judges from Canada, the United States England , Belgium and Malta on Saturday morning.

Graham said, "It’s a great opportunity for pet bird owners, breeders, show exhibitors and people who are interested in birds and bird-related items to come together to share information about exotic birds. More importantly, those attending the show who may be considering buying their first bird will have the opportunity to learn from our international judges, breeders, club members and show vendors. We also encourage families to come and spend the day with us, because the event is a lot of fun for all."

The event is open to the public on Saturday, October 20 from 1:00-4:00 p.m., following the judging, and on Sunday, October 21 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. On Saturday night, the BFBS will host a special banquet at a neighbouring hotel.

The Budgerigar and Foreign Bird Society (BFBS) was formed in 1938 by a small group of bird fanciers in Toronto. Today the BFBS boasts a large membership comprised of pet owners and breeders of birds ranging from canaries, budgies and finches to cockatoos and macaws. The club typically hosts the Annual Cage Bird Show in the fall featuring judging, vendors and other activities for the whole family. The October National Cage Bird Show & Expo is the largest in Canada in 2011. In 2008, the BFBS also hosted the Nationals to commemorate the club’s 70th anniversary that year.
